The picture above illustrates two things. First is the reason why most riggers recommend that the mast be completely removed from the boat at the end of the season. The second thing, that may not be apparent in this, is the problem with closed bodied turnbuckles. I have found that these tend to get grit in the threads and sometimes will gall and virtually seize. Personally I like the open body style which will enable you to flush out the threads with fresh water and save a lot of headaches and expense.
